Small Business Too Big to Ignore

What's this about?

Throughout 2016, the Ontario Chamber of Commerce (OCC), in partnership with chambers of commerce and boards of trade from across the province, is embarking on an ambitious campaign, Small Business Too Big to Ignore. This campaign will highlight the important contributions of small businesses to our economy and communities, and actively engage small businesses across the province in investigating the top barriers to small business growth – and identify solutions to overcome those challenges.

Our position

Small businesses are the backbone of the Ontario and Canadian economy. They are the wealth creators, job creators and risk takers. Small businesses of 100 or less employees constitute over 380,000 of Ontario businesses, employing nearly 3 million people. With over 40% of workers in Ontario employed by small business owners, these businesses provide the livelihoods and income for many people in our communities. Facing a number of underlying challenges that impact their ability to grow, small businesses are a powerful and significant stakeholder group that deserves to be heard and cannot be ignored.

Small Business Rocks!

In September, the Sault Ste. Marie Chamber of Commerce joined with Northern Credit Union to re-launch the campaign at local level, recognizing the important role that small business plays right here in Sault Ste. Marie and across Northern Ontario.

“The vital role of small businesses in driving the economy of the North is often under recognized,” says Northern Credit Union Senior Vice President, Tony Dunham. “We want to engage these important businesses in investigating the barriers to growth and identify solutions to overcome these challenges.”
