Algoma Family Services Foundation Mental Illness Awareness Week WEAR GREEN

Starts: 2016-10-05 Ends: 2016-10-05

Attention Businesses, Organizations and Community Groups,

You have been invited by Algoma Family Services (AFS) Foundation to show your support for those living with a mental illness in our community. On Wednesday, October 5th, we ask that you wear green, the official colour of mental health/illness, and throughout your business or organization collect pledges in support of Mental Illness Awareness Week. Pledges raised on October 5th, will help benefit the thousands of children and youth in Sault Ste. Marie and the Algoma District that experience mental health challenges everyday as a result of living with a mental illness. By showing your support, you will be making an important contribution to ending the stigma on mental illness.

We ask that you challenge yourself to come up with creative ways to raise awareness about the reality of mental illness and that it is not something we, as a community, should be silent about. Show your support by uploading photos of your team wearing green on October 5th to your social media outlets and using the hashtags #MIAW2016 #AFSF. There will be prizes awarded to the group that raises the most funds, as well as to individuals who have made a significant contribution to the campaign. Any individual who raises more than $20.00 will be entered in a draw to win a one night stay at the Delta Sault Ste. Marie plus two movie passes for Cineplex Entertainment.

Mental Illness Awareness Week 2016

Mental Illness Awareness Week (MIAW) occurs this year from October 2nd to the 8th. MIAW is an annual national education campaign intended to bring awareness to the thousands of Canadians living with a mental illness. Now under the coordination of the Canadian Alliance on Mental Illness and Mental Health (CAMIMH), the week was created in 1992 by the Canadian Psychiatric Association. According to CAMIMH, MIAW seeks to raise awareness of the level of mental illness in Canada; to reduce the stigma about mental illness amongst the general population of health care professionals; and to promote the positive effects of best practice in prevention, diagnosis and medical treatment.

Get Involved in MIAW

To get involved and to do your part in stopping the stigma against mental illness, all you have to do is wear green and get those around you to wear green on October 5th. Donations can be made to Algoma Family Services Foundation, which will help fund mental health programs and services for children and youth right here in our community. To be a MIAW Champion and receive your MIAW 2016 package, containing promotional posters and pledge forms please contact Kayla Primm, Fundraising Coordinator at kprimm@algomafamilyservices.org or at (705) 945-5050 ext. 2671.

Let’s come together to bring awareness to mental illness and end the stigma that surrounds it!

Thank you for your support,
