Sault Ste. Marie Chamber Participating in the Canadian Chamber Policy Resolution Process
The Sault Ste. Marie Chamber of Commerce, along with other Chambers & Boards of Trades from across Canada belong to the Canadian Chamber of Commerce (CCC), a network of about 200,000 businesses. We as the local Chamber are able to work with our national counterparts to advocate on federal issues and offer our membership access to programs offered by the Canadian Chamber. Some of these programs include Tools for Trade, a program that assists small businesses in building trading relationships in foreign markets and other programs that assist in building and growing a successful business.
This year, the Canadian Chamber has accomplished significant goals in advancing advocacy initiatives for the Canadian business community. In 2015, the federal government, committed funding to build new public transit infrastructure, reduced small business tax rates, expanded trade for Small & Medium Enterprises (SME’s), and extended the Mineral Exploration Tax Credit (METC) for another year. The Canadian Chamber was instrumental in advocating and ensuring the federal government acknowledged the need to support these types programs. These accomplishments, directly impact Canada’s business community and encourage competitive practices across all sectors.
The Sault Ste. Marie Chamber is currently in the process of participating in the CCC’s Policy Resolution process in anticipation for the Canadian Chamber of Commerce Annual General Meeting (AGM). Policy resolution submissions are reviewed by the policy committees of the Canadian Chamber and then brought forward for debate for voting at the Canadian Chamber AGM.  Policy resolutions that are adopted at the CCC AGM, then becomes a part of the Chamber’s advocacy and lobbying efforts with the federal level of government.
Recently, your Chamber has agreed to co-sponsor a number of policy resolution submissions with our Northern and Southern Chamber Counterparts as well as other Chambers from across Canada. Through these policy resolutions we will be advocating for; further development in transportation infrastructure, permanent implementation of the METC, mining innovation and federal support for the Canadian bioeconomy. These resolutions compliment the above outlined advocacy efforts undertaken by the Canadian Chamber. Continued advocacy efforts from the Chamber network we will help make Canada an even better place to do business.
As we strive to focus on Advocacy as the core business of the Sault Ste. Marie Chamber, we will continue to work hard with our members, other Chambers and all levels of government to further our goal of making Sault Ste. Marie the best place to do business.
